How to get soot off my cat?

Last night my cat tried to climb up the fireplace, thus getting him COVERED in soot. He was a white cat, now a dark dark grey all over. Is there a way to get it off him? I'm not sure about washing him because he gets a bit.. aggressive? Help please!
