Ceramic tile installation?

If I have a concrete base and I want to install ceramic tile...do I need any kind of backing before putting the tile down? I have been trying to find information about installing a ceramic tile floor but I'm not seeing anything about a backing. Is a backing only need when installing over wood floors?
