Fireplace vs Wood Burning Stove?

My husband and I are building a new home and have a fireplace (with a gas starter) set to be built in the house. A friend of ours who has had a fireplace and a wood burning stove in his homes raves about the stove and says the fireplace did not heat well and was messy among other things. We are considering going with the stove instead of the fireplace even though I love the look of the fireplace. I would like to hear some experiences from anyone who has had either or both.
