How can I burn a picture of my ex bf without completely destroying it?

This is going to sound really weird, but my bf and I just broke up and he wants to get back together. I made the decision to say no and now i want to "forget about him" by burning a picture of him. This is something my friends and I always do. I want to burn it but still be able to see most of the picture, but you should still be able to tell it was burned. I was thinking about putting it into my fireplace but that might catch the whole thing on fire. So do you have any ideas about how i can burn it without completely destroying it?
