I have a fireplace in a red brick wall that looks dated. The brick area?

is about a 9 foot high wall and probably 14 feet long. The mantle and hearth are even made of brick . The mantle has a long solid piece of wood on it. How can I update it? Paint it? What are my other options? Help, I need your great ideas.
